Making Oak Gall Ink

Oak gall ink is famous for its longevity, lightfastness, and ability to darken as the ink oxidizes and dries. I made this batch of ink from oak galls I collected from a giant Oregon White Oak tree in my backyard, as well as around the Portland area.

Clips:

  • Oregon White Oak galls, collected and dried

  • Boiled in water and strained

  • Adding ferrous sulfate (iron) powder

  • Bottling and using ink in calligraphy
