Learn Calligraphy with Botanical Inks
Hosted by Hoyt Arboretum Friends
Did you know ink can be made from trees? It’s true! The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the best ink-making trees around. Join us for a fun workshop to explore the art of calligraphy with hand-made botanical inks derived from local walnut, oak, alder, and other trees and plants.
This workshop is taught by Molly Chidsey, a Portland-based illustrator, calligrapher, and art educator. Read more about Molly’s teaching style here.
In this workshop, you will learn:
1. How ink is made from trees and other plants
2. What modern calligraphy is and how is it different from handwriting
3. How to use a paint brush with natural inks to make shapes and letters
4. How to letter your own name in calligraphy with a natural ink of your choice
Example of modern calligraphy made with pointed pen and homemade ink I made from the oak galls of the Oregon White Oak tree.
