Making Handmade Ink from Walnut Hulls
You know those squishy brown blobs that appear beneath walnut trees every autumn? They may not look like much, but walnut hulls are rich with tannins—and ideal for making beautiful, earthy ink.
Join me for a fun, hands-on (and a little messy!) workshop where we’ll transform foraged walnut tree hulls into handmade ink from scratch.
Walnut ink is known for its rich, chocolate-brown color and has been used for centuries as a dye, pigment, and writing and drawing ink. In this workshop, you’ll learn how walnut hulls are gathered and prepared for ink-making, then work through the process of simmering, straining, treating, and bottling your own natural ink.
The walnut hulls will be prepared before class so we can get right to the fun part: making ink!
You’ll leave with your own bottle of handmade walnut ink, ready to use for drawing, lettering, painting, journaling, and your own creative experiments. No previous ink-making or art experience is needed.
No experience needed. Beginners welcome!
