Introduction to Modern Calligraphy

Amplify your words with hand-lettered calligraphy! This fun and practical workshop is great for beginners and intermediate calligraphy students. You will learn how to create calligraphic letters, words, and phrases with a simple tool: the brush pen. This workshop is taught by Molly Chidsey, a Portland-based illustrator, calligrapher, and art educator. Read more about Molly’s teaching style here.
In this workshop, you will learn:
1. How to use a brush pen to create thick and thin contrasting lines
2. The eight essential shapes that make up the calligraphy alphabet
3. How to form the letters of the lowercase alphabet (miniscules)
4. Create a layout of a phrase, quote, or name in calligraphy to take home
How the basic shapes taught in this workshop combine to form letters.
Supplies needed (all available at Tokki Art Supply!)
- One small-tip brush pen, such as Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Touch (hard tip or soft tip ok) 
- Smooth, semi-translucent marker paper (Canson or similar student-grade brand, 9”x12”, at least 5 sheets) 
- Smooth tracing paper (Canson or similar student-grade brand, 9”x12”, at least 5 sheets)
